X (Twitter) Character Counter

A plain character count gets X wrong: links, emoji and some alphabets are weighed differently. This counter weighs them as X does, so the number matches the composer.

This is over the limit. X will not let you post it until it is shorter.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you type here is sent to Reachism.

How it works

  1. 1. Write or paste

Type the post here, or paste a draft from your notes app.

  2. 2. Pick your account

Standard accounts have 280; X Premium subscribers can write longer posts.

  3. 3. Trim to fit

The "left" box turns red when you are over. Cut words, not links: a long link costs no more than a short one.

How X counts characters

X publishes its counting rules in its open-source twitter-text library. Letters from Latin, Greek and Cyrillic scripts and common punctuation count as one; characters outside those ranges — Chinese, Japanese and Korean among them — count as two, and so does each emoji.

Every link is shortened to a t.co address, so it always counts as 23 characters however long or short you typed it.

Replies count the same way. An @mention at the start of a reply that X adds for you does not count, but one you type yourself does.

Questions about the X (Twitter) Character Counter

Most counters count every symbol as one. X weighs links, emoji and some scripts differently, so a post full of emoji or links will show a different number here — the one X uses.

X Premium lets subscribers write posts of up to 25,000 characters. Only the first part shows in the timeline, with "Show more" for the rest — so keep the opening within 280 anyway.

Yes, every character of them, the # and @ included. The counter shows how many you have so you can see what they cost.

No. The counting happens in your browser and the text never leaves this page.
